"...give and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you."
                                                                                                   Luke 6:38 (ESV)

We are discussing the dynamic of living on the basis of God's eternal economy, called the kingdom of God. There is a reality beyond and behind the temporal world. We have access there because we have been born of the Spirit (John 3:3). That realm operates totally under God's direct control. There are no second causes interfering with fulfillment.  We as God's new covenant people have the privilege of living on this level, as we trust him alone as our covenant Lord.

We are conscious of his commitment to bless us. He marshals all the resources of heaven and earth to show his favor toward his people. He does not isolate them from trouble and pain, but supplies their needed resources in such abundance and in such miraculous ways that they stand out as examples of grace.

One example of how this kingdom works is captured in the text above. God likes "givers." He is a giver himself. He doesn't just give to get, but gives because it is his nature. When his people are in fellowship with him, they become givers also. When they give, they activate the abundance of the kingdom. Nothing can stop the flow when giving is the style and substance of ones life. Notice that God's sovereignty is in charge of the process.  Some old translations even say, "...shall men give into your bosom." The men are instruments in the hand of God who determines the outcome.

This isn't some "prosperity formula" for manipulating God's promises for sordid gain. It is how the kingdom works. Those interested in trying to find a "get rich quick" scheme are still focusing on getting. They give TO get. God gives AND gets and that is what his people do.

During this time of economic fear, kingdom people will recognize the opportunity to give even more and find a freedom from the panic that seizes those who are trying to hold on to what they have. It is time to invest. God's economy is depression-proof. It does not support greed and idolatry, but guarantees the supply to get his work done. Those lined up with his purpose and embracing his assignment, will find enough to succeed.

When the temporal economy is shaky, it is time to see clearly the ultimate kingdom and embrace it.

     More next time.
