"I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world."

John 17:6a (ESV)

We often speak of our efforts to glorify God. Jesus knew exactly what was needed to accomplish that.  "...having accomplished the work that you gave me to do." (John 17:4)  Now he identifies what that assignment was. He was sent to make real and plain the meaning of God's name.

Since the sin in the Garden mankind has been groping for the true nature of God. When the alienation occurred, Adam and Eve became afraid of the God they had been enjoying since their creation. They were confused about his true nature. Their descendants created hundreds of religions reflecting their confusion about the nature of God. They tried to appease him by sacrificing animals and even their own children. They sought to approach him by building great edifices to symbolize his excellence. They tried to recreate his presence by molding idols of metal and wood. They made up stories about him to convey to their children an appropriate worship of this unknown and unseen god.

When Jesus came, he revealed the true nature of God. HE IS A FATHER. It was the Son who came. He lived before them as a Son relating to a Father. He showed them the peace such a relationship produces. He modeled the confidence a son can have when he knows who his father really is.

In revealing the true name of the Father, Jesus also revealed the true nature of life on earth. It is not about surviving, earning, achieving, winning, and dying. It is about intimacy with the Father and partnership with him. It requires fellowship without fear and work without merit.  Jesus showed what God originally had in mind when he created mankind on the earth. Everyone was designed to live this life of conscious presence with the Father and meaningful work in his business. Anything else is a life misspent.

So, how does that relate to our assignment? We too are called to make his name known to those we have been given. We can do that. First we identify those we have been given. It may not be many, but probably will include as many as Jesus had. Just twelve men were assigned to Jesus. He could die knowing that he had made them aware of the true nature of God. His death and resurrection would finalize the revelation and then the Helper would come to make sense of the events. We have been given people around us for the purpose of making his name known. We do that first by living the life of a son. If we don't demonstrate it, they won't get it. As our practice matches our proclamation, the impact is transformational.

Don't spend so much time worrying about the specific vocation you are to enter. If you are not making his name known, it doesn't matter. If you are, almost anywhere will do. You can be assured that he will position you as you are aligned with his purpose for being here.
